Movado SE Extreme Texalium Review

Movado has been modernizing some new offerings from the Movado of yesteryear, creating new designs to fit today’s trends. The Movado Bold Chronograph is definitely bold and aesthetically it is a stunner. We all know Movado for the Museum series that has kept them relevant for years. This is a modern take on an iconic watch series. The layout is nice with 3 subdials and date window located inside the 6 o’clock subdial. The watch case is made from black TR90 composite and stainless steel. The chronograph pushers and leather strap are black as well. I am not sure how useful the actual chronograph function are on the Bold, the indices in the subdials are hard to read. The iconic “sun dot” at 12 o’clock is still there, only with a different spin on it.

I like that the Movado Bold Chrono is a larger watch at 42.5mm. Overall, if you have always liked Movado, this is an affordable offering coming in currently at $495 MSRP. The Bold is very distinctive and can only imagine it will be a conversation starter.

Pros - It is bold, distinctive, fresh look, nice design

Consideration - Chronograph functions are more aesthetics than practical in design

A refreshing change of pace from Movado, away from the highly recognizable Museum Collection. This is a step back in time, bringing the retro 70’s back to the forefront. The Movado Datron Series 800 (ref. 2600084) is the first watch from Movado that has grabbed my attention in some time. Noticeably missing is the sun dot located at 12 o’clock, now replaced by an appropriately sized date window. I like that the quintessential dot is gone, but not forgotten, represented by the shape of the date window.

The Datron Series 800 is offered with a silver or black dial. On this watch, I prefer the silver dial as the black subdials have a nice “pop” visually off the face. The case and bracelet are a combination of polish and brushed finishes. Movado did a nice job on the butterfly clasp, works well with this watch. The movement is the quality ETA 2894-2, visible through the exhibition case back. A well built watch, that is visually appealing and well thought out.

Pros - Case has great retro feel, versatile

Consideration - Pushing 3K MSRP, this is in the upper tier of Movado’s collections.

Movado introduces the newest version of the SE Extreme in 2011, the SE Extreme Texalium. What is Texalium? Texalium is highly reflective, aluminized, woven glass fiber. Movado has been putting out some really nice designs and this one might be W&R favorite. The texalium is used on all sides of the watch, boldly standing out against the rest of the watch done with a PVD matte black finish. The dial has the unmistakable Museum layout, with nice red writing, visually contrasting the stark black dial at 6 o’clock. Sometimes the crown seems to be an after thought in the watch industry, not the case with the SE Extreme Texalium. The crown is appropriately sized, capped with black carbon fiber. Great added touch by Movado. An automatic ETA 2824-2 movement powers this beauty, with a 40 hour power reserve. The movement can be seen through the exhibition case back, along with the rotor bearing a red “M”. A black rubber strap, with deployant buckle holds this sporty 44mm watch secure to the wrist.

The design and visual contrast of the black PVD against the shiny woven pattern of the texalium is very well done. New materials are constantly being introduced into the watch industry, texalium looks to be one of the better ones. Price is just north of 2K before any type of discount. The SE Extreme Texalium is very good value at this price point.

Pros - Texalium, ETA 2824-2, larger case, new look from Movado

Consideration - Only offered on a rubber strap
